FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - San Diego State wrapped up competition at the 2016 Lumberjack Diving Invitational Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff, Ariz., sending two divers to the finals of the 3-meter event. The Aztecs had a pair of athletes advance to the finals of the 1-meter springboard on Friday and also had a pair of three top 10 finishes on the platform yesterday as well.
Six schools were represented at the meet including Boise State, Nevada, San Jose State and New Mexico State along with SDSU and host Northern Arizona.
Saturday's 3-meter competition saw Alexandra Caplan (310.60) and Marie Yacopino (278.30) finish third and fourth in the prelims (21 divers) respectively to qualify for the final round. Caplan would end the event in fourth place after scoring 283.55 during her six dives in the finals with Yacopino placing 11th with a mark of 226.15.
SDSU's two other divers, Nicole Dutton and Peyton Gabris, were 17th and 19th in the prelims with scores of 229.05 and 222.80 respectively.
On Friday, the 1-meter event (27 divers saw Yacopino finish fifth in the prelims with a score of 265.35 while Caplan was seventh at 260.15 as both divers advanced to the finals. Caplan would end up in sixth place after compiling 271.95 points over her final six dives while Yacopino placed 12th with a score of 233.35.
Dutton and Gabris were unable to advance to the finals after recording scores of 232.60 (13th) and 210.15 (20th) in the prelims. The twosome, however, did provide SDSU with a pair of top eight finishes on the platform board Friday afternoon.
Dutton's score of 210.75 was good enough to earn her second place (21 divers) among the 21 competitors vying on the platform. Gabris, meanwhile, captured eighth place with a mark of 198.75 points.
Caplan's score of 197.00 for her five dives on the platform put her in 10th place. Yacopino rounded out the Aztec contingent by finishing 21st with a mark of 125.95.
Up next for the Aztec divers is a dual meet against Pepperdine on Friday, Dec. 2, schedule to get underway at 2:00 p.m. (PT) at the Aztec Aquaplex.
