Updated Pre-Qualifying Bracket
TULSA, Okla. ââ'¬" San Diego State's Santiago Cevallos (Queretaro, Mexico) won a pair of matches on Saturday to lead the Aztec men's tennis team during the first two rounds of the pre-qualifying bracket at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.
Cevallos emerged triumphant in his opening encounter with Robert Mounger of Ole Miss by a count of 6-4, 6-0, before rallying for a three-set victory over Memphis' Chris Patzanovsky, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. With his results, the SDSU junior will square off against Alex Keyser of Columbia in the round of 64 on Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. CT/8 a.m. PT.
The rest of the Aztec delegation experienced mixed results on Saturday, with senior Marko Goles-Babic (Zagreb, Croatia), fellow classmate Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Hesse, Germany) and sophomore Sander Gjoels-Andersen (Klampenborg, Denmark) each winning their respective openers in straight sets, before falling in round two.
Goles-Babic survived a nail-biter in the second set of his battle with Sean Huynh of Denver, but ultimately prevailed, 6-3, 7-6 (6), while Ianakiev experienced minimal resistance in a 6-0, 6-2 conquest of Texas' William Jou. In addition, Gjoels-Andersen posted an identical score in his victory over Charlie Parry of Wake Forest.
The SDSU trio was not as fortunate in the second round despite some valiant efforts. Ianakiev captured the first frame against Denver's No. 7 seed Yannik James, but could not sustain the momentum, as his Pioneer adversary rallied for a three-set decision, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Goles-Babic, meanwhile, came up short against Joe Woolley of Utah, 6-3, 7-6 (10), but not until after gritty performance in the second set. Gjoels-Anderson also came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard against Old Dominion's Michael Weindl, 6-3, 6-2.
The Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships continue on Sunday with round of 64 and round of 32 action in the pre-qualifying bracket, as well as consolation matches.
