COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore Ashley Henderson (St. Louis) has been named the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Women's Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced today.
The Student-Athlete-of-the-Year award recognizes the outstanding female and male athletes in the sport of outdoor track and field. Student-athletes are nominated and selected by the head coaches of each member institution.
Henderson narrowly missed a title in the 100 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last weekend, running a wind-aided time of 10.96 seconds, just 0.01 behind the winner Ariana Washington of Oregon at 10.95. She also anchored the sixth-place 4x100 team to a time of 43.68 in the final two days after setting a school record of 43.55 in the prelims. Henderson also ran a time of 23.30 in the 200 in Thursday's prelims to take 11th, finishing with first-team USTFCCCA All-America honors in both the 100 and 4x100, and second-team accolades in the 200.
Henderson helped the Aztecs finish in a tie for 20th at the meet, their fourth top-25 team showing over the last five years.
Last month, Henderson won the 100, 200 and anchored the winning 4x100 at the MW Championships in Fresno, Calif., en route to being named the Women's Outstanding Performer of the Meet.
Henderson is the second SDSU student-athlete to win the award under head coach Shelia Burrell, joining three-time NCAA triple jump champion Shanieka Thomas, who swept the 2013 awards (indoor and outdoor).
Henderson has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, which will take place from June 30-July 10 in Eugene, in both the 100 and the 200.
