LAS VEGAS - No. 3 seed San Diego State men's tennis owned the court on Friday, dominating No. 6 seed Air Force with a 4-0 victory in the first round of the 2016 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.
It was the Aztecs' first 4-0 win at the Mountain West Championship since SDSU beat Air Force and UNLV in consecutive matches to open the 2010 Mountain West Championship.
San Diego State (11-13) opened the match akin to its contest against the Falcons (7-18) earlier this season by taking the doubles point. Marko Goles-Babic and Freddy Gelbrich topped Andrew Parks and Max Olson, 6-2, on court No. 3. In the top spot, 2016 All-Mountain West Doubles team Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev defeated Jack McCullers and Tadhg Collins by the same 6-2 score.
In singles play, the Aztecs continued to show domination, using straight sets on courts three, four and five to advance in the Championship. Ianakiev beat Olson at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Sander Gjoels-Andersen beat Lucas Fumagalli 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot. Goles-Babic, who clinched San Diego State's win over No. 64 New Mexico on April 27, secured the Aztec win with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Luke Sanderson.
San Diego State continues play at the 2016 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship on Sat., April 30 at 3 p.m. The Aztecs will play the winner of a match today between No. 2 seed Boise State and No. 7 seed Nevada.
