LAS VEGAS - San Diego State men's tennis won its third straight doubles point but was unable to top Mountain West opponent UNLV, falling to the Rebels, 4-3, in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon.
The Rebels improve to 4-2 in Mountain West play and is now 10-9 overall. With the loss, the Aztecs now have a matching conference record at 4-2 and are 9-13 this season.
The Aztecs took the early advantage, winning the doubles point in come-from-behind fashion. Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev were bested in the top spot by Jakob Amilon and Ruben Alberts, 6-4. However, Marko Goles-Babic and Freddy Gelbrich were able to defeat Alexandr Cozbinov and Richard Solberg, 6-3, on court No. 3, which Hendrik Jebens and Sander Gjoels-Andersen matched in the No. 2 spot over Evaldo Neto and Adam Gage-Brown for the point.
The Rebels were able to post a come-from-behind performance of their own, though, in singles play. Cevallos was defeated by Solberg on court No. 6, 6-2, 6-1, Ianakiev lost in the No. 3 spot to Alberts, 6-1, 6-4 and Jebens fell to Cozbinov, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2.
Courts No. 4 and 5 attempted the Aztec rebound, with Goles-Babic besting Neto, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, and Sander Gjoels-Andersen winning his match against Gage-Brown, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
But Gelbrich was unable to secure the SDSU win, falling in the top spot to Amilon, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
San Diego State concludes its regular season on Weds., April 27 with an 11 a.m. neutral site at UNLV against New Mexico. The Aztecs begin play at the Mountain West Tournament, hosted by the Rebels, on Fri., April 29.
