SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team found success on Friday morning as it defeated UC San Diego in four of five races. The two San Diego schools took to Mission Bay for an early morning showdown to prepare for their respective post seasons. The Aztecs topped the Tritons in all but the varsity four event.

The first eight duel was the first competition of the day with SDSU recording a time of 6 minutes, 20.9 seconds followed by UCSD with a time of 6:35.0.

In the second eight event, San Diego State crossed first (6:35.8) followed by the Tritons (7:02.8). In the third eight race, the Aztecs entered two boats to UCSD's one. The SDSU `A' crew crossed first (6:42.6) followed by the Aztec `B' boat (6:50.2) and the Tritons novice eight (7:04.6).

The varsity four matchup would be the only race of the morning that UCSD would claim. The Tritons recorded a time of 7:21.9 followed by San Diego State at 7:31.9.

The final event of the day was the novice four race with the Aztecs posted a time of 7:24.4 and UCSD recording a time of 8:10.5.

"It was a good day for the entire team, winning four out of five races," said head coach Bill Zack. "We had some changes to the lineups of the first and second eight after the San Diego Crew Classic and both boats raced really well. We had 46 women competing today and they showed the solid depth of the team as we look forward to the American Athletic Conference Championships, where we will race the maximum allowable 42 people. We need to get better and more consistent performance out of the four (crew), and that will be one of our points of emphasis as we get ready for the WIRA Championships. We like racing UC San Diego. They are a solid team that will challenge for a spot in the Division II field at the NCAA Championships and the dual meet gives both schools a really good racing experience in the middle of the spring racing season. Tomorrow's 1000-meter pieces with UC Santa Barbara will give us another chance to test out our lineups and get more valuable race experience."

The Aztec will take on the Gauchos tomorrow morning on Mission Bay beginning at 7:45 a.m. as a final tune-up before the WIRA Championships which will be held on April 30-May 1.
