BOISE, Idaho - Despite wins from senior Freddy Gelbrich in both singles and doubles play, the San Diego State men's tennis team fell to No. 68 Boise State, 4-1, during a Mountain West match at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center on Friday.
The Aztecs fall to 2-1 in Mountain West play (7-12 overall), while the Broncos move to 4-2 against conference opponents (15-9 overall).
Inclement weather moved the match to Boise State's indoor tennis complex, but the match still opened on a high note for the Aztecs. Gelbrich and Marko Goles-Babic topped Brian Foley and Pedro Platzeck on court No. 3, 6-3. But Lewis Roskilly and Thomas Tenreiro beat Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev in the No. 2 spot, 6-4. Sander Gjoels-Andersen and Hendrik Jebens fell by an identical score to Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell in the top spot, and the doubles point was awarded to the Broncos.
In singles play, Goles-Babic lost a nail-biter in his first set to Butters, 7-5, on court No. 4, but dropped the second set, 6-0. Ianakiev suffered a 6-1 first set loss to Mitchell in the No. 3 spot then ultimate fell in the tiebreak, 7-6 (5).
Gelbrich was able to keep the Scarlet and Black's hopes alive, however, in the leading position when he defeated Foley, 6-4, 6-4 for his team's lone point of the day.
However, Jebens lost in the adjacent court, 7-6 (7), 6-2, to Tenreiro for the final 4-1 Boise State win.
Upon the match's conclusion, Gjoels-Andersen had lost his first set in the No. 5 spot to Platzeck, 5-7, but rallied in the second set for a 6-3 win. He was leading Platzeck, 2-0, when the match was decided. Cornelius Kolb was trailing Roskilly, 0-3, in the No. 6 spot.
The Aztecs return home to host Utah State in Mountain West action on Sun., April 17 at noon. Gelbrich, the team's lone senior, will be honored prior to the match, SDSU's final home match of the season.
