The San Diego State track and field team completed the first day of the California Invitational Heptathlon Wednesday afternoon at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa, Calif. Karsen Sper leads the Aztecs with 2,320 points with four of the seven events in the books.
Sper's 2,320 points is good enough for 23rd place out of 51 initial entrants. SDSU's Kassidy Ellis made it through three events before not starting the 200-meter dash in the final event of the day. Nike's Nia Ali leads after the first day with 3,712 points.
Ellis kicked things off for San Diego State by taking ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.48 seconds for 912 points with Sper right behind in 13th in 14.69 for 883 points. Next up was the high jump, where Ellis tied for 18th by clearing 5 feet, 4 ¼ inches (1.63m) for 771 points. Sper tied for 28th in the event with a mark of 5-01.75 (1.57m) for 701 points.
Ellis also paced the Aztecs in the shot put with a heave of 35-06.00 (10.82m) for an additional 583 points and 21st-place showing, while Sper came in 36th with a toss of 32-04.75 (9.87m) for 521 points. The first day ended with the 200 as Sper led the way in 25th with a wind-aided time of 25.80 for 815 points and Ellis not starting the race.
Former SDSU great and current volunteer assistant coach Allison Reaser was also in action on the day, competing in the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon. She's in seventh after four events with 3,507 points.
The final day of the California Invitational Heptathlon gets underway at 10 a.m. PT Thursday for Sper, while Reaser is slated for a 1 p.m. PT start in the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon.
Grace Hanshaw, Elaine Ribeiro and Lily Seynaeve are also in action tomorrow night, kicking off the Bryan Clay Invitational for San Diego State with the 5,000-meter run at 6:20 p.m. PT.
