RENO, Nev. - The San Diego State men's tennis team secured its second straight win against a Mountain West opponent, using a dominating performance at Nevada to beat the Wolfpack, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
SDSU improves to 2-0 in Mountain West play with a 7-11 overall record, while Nevada falls to 4-11, suffering the loss in its conference opener.
In doubles play, the Aztecs were forced to come from behind to earn their first point of the day. Hendrik Jebens and Sander Gjoels-Andersen fell in the No. 1 spot to Robert Allan and Andrew Poustie, 6-0. But Freddy Gelbrich and Marko Goles-Babic toppled Ryan Andrada and Billy Bumgardner, 6-2, from No. 3 and Milen Ianakiev and Santiago Cevallos earned a tight victory on court No. 2, 7-6 (4), over Mile Cilic and Robert Margitfalvi.
San Diego State was then able to ride its momentum into singles play, not needing a third set on any court to get the match victory. Goles-Babic topped Allan in the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-2. On the neighboring court, Gjoels-Andersen beat Peter O'Donovan, 6-1, 6-1, from No. 4. Jebens clinched the San Diego State win by defeating Cilic on court No. 2, 6-2, 6-2.
Upon the match's decision, No. 112 Gelbrich in the No. 1 spot had won his first set against Ryan Andrada, 6-4, and was ahead in the second set, 3-1. Ianakiev had also won the first set, topping Andrew Poustie at No. 3, 6-3, and was winning the second set, 5-2. From the No. 6 spot, Cevallos had fallen in his first set to Robert Margitfalvi, 3-6, and was behind in the second set, 3-4.
Next up, the Scarlet and Black return to the confines of Aztec Tennis Center, welcoming Mountain West foe New Mexico to town on Thurs., April 7.
