SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Though the Aztecs won the doubles point for the second time in three matches, the San Diego State men's tennis team was unable to maintain its momentum and lost to Santa Clara, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Santa Clara's Degheri Tennis Center.
Doubles play saw SDSU win its second doubles point in three matches. In the No. 3 spot, Freddy Gelbrich and Marko Goles-Babic defeated Kamram Khan, 6-1, but Milen Ianakiev and Santiago Cevallos dropped their match on court No. 2 to Connor Garnett and Robert Seby, 6-1, to even the score. Hendrik Jebens and Sander Gjoels-Andersen at No. 1 were able to clinch the point, however, with a 6-3 win against Ashot Khacharyan and Andrew Gu.
In singles play, the Aztecs were unable to feed off of the energy their showing in doubles yielded. Ianakiev fell 6-2, 6-3 to Gu on court No. 2, but his doubles partner, Cevallos, was able to rebound with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 5 spot over Khan. Goles-Babic, however, fell to Garnett 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 on court No. 4.
Freshman Raul de la Torre kept SDSU's spirits high, winning his second straight match after coming from behind to beat Sebastien Mathieu in the No. 6 spot 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
But San Diego State was unable to keep its lead, as Gelbrich fell at No. 1 to Khacharyan, 6-2, 4-6, 6-7 (8), and Seby beat Gjoels-Andersen in the No. 3 spot 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The Aztecs will look to rebound when they travel to Nevada to face their Mountain West foe on Fri., April 1 for a 1 p.m. match.
