SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team was unable to overpower Pepperdine at Aztec Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Waves, 5-1, in non-conference action.
Marko Goles-Babic and Sander Gjoels-Andersen recorded the Aztecs' (3-6) first loss of the day, falling 6-3 to Tom Hill and Stefan Menichella.
However, SDSU rebounded when Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev continued their impressive run this dual season with a fourth straight victory. The pair topped Lautaro Pane and Pedro Iamachkine, the thirtieth ranked doubles pairing in the nation, 7-5, from the No. 1 spot.
But Hendrik Jebens and Freddy Gelbrich couldn't secure the doubles point for San Diego State, dropping a grueling 7-6 (6) set to Guilherme Hadlich and Gabriel Sidney.
Singles play was not kind to the Aztecs. From court No. 2, Jebens fell to Pane 6-4, 6-0. Cevallos dropped his match in the No. 6 spot to Hill 6-2, 6-4. On court No. 5, Cornelius Kolb lost to Iamachkine, 6-3, 6-1. Gelbrich, in the No. 1 position, suffered a loss at the hands of Hadlich, 6-0, 6-3.
Ianakiev carried his momentum over from doubles play, posting SDSU's lone point of the day with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win over Menichella on court No. 3.
The week is far from over for San Diego State, who will send four pairings to the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship this weekend, hosted by the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Play begins at 8 a.m. on Friday with Cevallos and Ianakiev competing against Charlie Croxford and Richard Solberg from UNLV. Jonas Meinzer and Colb will also begin the championship at 8 a.m. Gjoels-Andersen and Jebens face Oklahoma State's Lukas Finzelberg and Jurence Mendoza at 10:15 a.m. San Diego State head coach Gene Carswell and assistant coach Jeff Thomsen play William LeFevre, who lettered one year at SDSU, and Stephen Conching, who competed at the University of the Pacific, at 9:30 a.m.
