SAN DIEGO -
Ashley Henderson won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash with the second-fastest times in school history to pace the San Diego State track and field team on the final day of the 38th annual Aztec Invitational Saturday at AzTrack on SDSU Sports Deck.
Henderson first ran a wind-legal time of 11.29 seconds to beat out 29 other entrants in the invitational 100. The time only trails Tonette Dyer's 2004 time of 11.20 for the fastest in school history. Heading into the weekend, no other athlete in the country had posted a wind-legal time faster than 11.38.
Less than three hours later, Henderson dominated the 200 field, finishing first out of 37 entrants with a time of 23.16 into a 1.7 mph headwind. The 23.16 has only been beaten by Tonette Dyer in school history. Dyer, who is in the Aztec Hall of Fame, posted a time of 22.34 in 2004. Like the 100, the time of 23.16 is faster than any athlete has run in the country this year heading into the weekend.
Sierra Brabham-Lawrence also came up with a win, taking down the invitational 100-meter hurdles in 13.44.
Both SDSU relays - 4x100 and 4x400 - also won the invitational races with the 4x100 team running the 10th-fastest time in school history (45.03) and the 4x100 logging a time of 3:47.08.
Tyra Lea came in second in the invitational 400 in 55.35 with Simone Glenn right behind in fourth in 55.74.
Madison Gipson and Courtney Robinson each posted a pair of top-five finishes, with Gipson taking third in the invitational 400 hurdles in 1:00.56 and fifth in the invitational 100 in 14.06, and Robinson fourth in the invitational 100 hurdles (13.90) and fifth in the invitational 400 hurdles (1:02.31).
Jazmen Bunch finished fifth in the invitational 200 in 24.04 and sixth in the invitational 100 in 11.89, while Starlynn Singleton came in eighth in the 100 (11.98).
In the field events, the San Diego State pole vaulters continued their dominance, taking third, fourth and eighth, respectively, by Bonnie Draxler (13-08.50 (4.18m)), Karen Snapper (13-00.75 (3.98m)) and Marissa Berry (13-00.75 (3.98m)). Former Aztecs Kortney Ross (14-00.50 (4.28m)) and Kristen Brown (13-08.50 (4.18m)) finished first and second as well in the event.
Lisa-Anne Barrow was fifth in the invitational long jump with a leap of 18-05.75 (5.63m), followed closely by Jelena McNown (18-05.25 (5.62m)) in sixth. Je'Neal Ainsworth logged a sixth-place effort in the invitational triple jump (38-01.50 (11.62m)) and Kassidy Ellis cleared 5-03.25 (1.61m) for a 10th-place showing in the high jump.
Rachel Alesi posted the fifth-best discus throw in the invitational event with a heave of 168-02 (51.26m), the sixth-best mark in school history. Alex Evans, meanwhile, came in eighth in the invitational discus throw (164-10 (50.25m) and ninth in the invitational shot put (45-05.00 (13.84m)).
SDSU is back in action next weekend, splitting squads to the Stanford Invitational (April 1-2) in Stanford, Calif., and the California Collegiate Challenge in La Jolla, Calif., on April 2.
