Karsen Sper is in second place after the first day of the heptathlon at the 38th annual Aztec Invitational Thursday at AzTrack on SDSU Sports Deck.
With four of the seven events completed, Sper has amassed 2,834 points. The 2,834 points only trails former Aztec and current SDSU volunteer coach Allison Reaser's 3,397.
Sper started the day with the second-fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.47 seconds. In the high jump, she cleared 4 feet, 8 ¾ inches (1.44) for the fifth-best mark of the competition. Next up was the shot put, where Sper finished fourth among the heptathletes with a heave of 32-11.75 (10.05m). She finished her day with the second-fastest 200, clocking a time of 25.60.
The school-record holder and 2014 NCAA runner-up in the heptathlon, Reaser won all four events of the heptathlon today.
Day two of the heptathlon gets underway at 9 a.m. PT Friday with the long jump and ends with the 800 at 12:35 p.m. PT. The rest of the San Diego State team starts competition at 9:15 a.m. PT with the 4x100-meter relay and ends with the 3,000 at 8 p.m. PT.
