LAKESIDE, Calif. -
The San Diego State men's golf team has six players among the top 10 and leads by 25 strokes after two rounds of the Barona Collegiate Cup Monday at the par-72, 7,354-yard Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif.
The Aztecs opened with a 14-under 274 in the first round and followed with a 7-under 281 to sit at 21-under 555, ahead of runner-up Minnesota's 4-over 580 (283-297). Sacramento State (13-over 589 (283-306)), Boise State (15-over 591 (290-301)) and UC Irvine (18-over 594 (295-299)) round out the top five of the 11-team tournament.
SDSU is looking for its fifth consecutive Barona Collegiate Cup team title.
San Diego State was led over the first two rounds by Blake Abercrombie and Gunn Yang, who are each are tied for second at 6-under 138. Abercrombie, competing as an individual, opened with a 6-under 66 and followed with an even-par 72, while Yang went 68 (4 under) and 70 (2 under). Abercrombie and Yang are five shots behind Minnesota's Runar Arnorsson, who shot a school-record 10-under 62 in the first round and followed with a 1-under 71 to record an 11-under-par 133 after 36 holes.
Brian Song, meanwhile, is just a stroke back of Abercrombie and Yang at 5-under 139, thanks to a 3-under 69 and a 2-under 70.
Nahum Mendoza III is sixth at 4-under 140 (69-71), while Riccardo Michelini (68-74) and Ryann Ree (72-70) are tied for seventh at 2-under 142 to round out the Aztecs' scoring team.
Competing as individuals, Pablo Matesanz (73-71--144) is tied for 13th at even-par, PJ Samiere (71-77--148) finished the two rounds at 4-over and is tied for 22nd, Otto Vanhatalo is tied for 52nd with matching 77's for a 10-over 154 and Michael Koeneke (80-87--167) is tied for 71st at 23-over par.
The final round gets underway at 8 a.m. PT Tuesday.
