SAN DIEGO - The No. 75 San Diego State men's tennis team dropped another hard-fought match to a top-30 team, falling to No. 26 Memphis in the second day of the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic on Friday at Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs will host No. 49 Harvard at 2 p.m. on Saturday to close out the tournament.
In doubles play, after holding the nation's No. 1 doubles pairing to a 7-6 (7) loss the day prior, Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev dropped a 6-3 match to Kai Lemke and Louis Asser. Hendrik Jebens and Sander Gjoels-Andersen, who beat Jolan Cailleau and Connor Curry of No. 8 Texas Tech on Thursday, suffered a 6-4 loss to Andrew Watson and Shakeel Manji, awarding the doubles point to Memphis.
Unfortunately, San Diego State was unable to rally in singles play after falling behind. Marko Goles-Babic lost to Chris Patzanovsky in the No. 4 spot 6-4, 6-0. Lemke defeated Ianakiev on court No. 3 6-3, 6-2, and Gjoels-Andersen suffered a loss against Felix Rauch 6-4, 6-4, for the final 4-0 Memphis win.
Upon the match's conclusion, No. 100 Gelbrich had taken his first set against No. 86 Andrew Watson, 6-1, at No. 1, but fell in the second set, 5-7. On court No. 2, Jebens also won his first set, topping No. 61 Ryan Peniston, 7-6 (6), but was trailing in the second set, 2-5. Cornelius Kolb was leading Shakeel Manji in the No. 6 spot 7-5, 5-3.
