LA JOLLA, Calif, - The San Diego State track and field team won eight individual events and the 4x400-meter relay at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge Saturday in La Jolla, Calif. The Aztecs finished second in the six-team event, despite resting many of their top performers.
On the track, SDSU bagged four wins, including Starlynn Singleton in the 100-meter dash (12.11 seconds), Lisa-Anne Barrow in the 200 (25.00), Lakin Hatcher in the 400 (56.86) and Sierra Brabham-Lawrence in the 400 hurdles (1:02.62).
The San Diego State 4x400-Meter 'A' team, meanwhile, won with a time of 3:49.16.
Other top-three times on the track came from Je'Neal Ainsworth in the 100 hurdles (second, 15.29) and Courtney Robinson in the 400 hurdles (second, 1:03.04).
On the field side of things, events were won by Bonnie Draxler in the pole vault (12 feet, 6 ¼ inches (3.82m)), Singleton in the triple jump (37-10.50 (11.54m)), Freja Liljedahl (176-03 (53.72m)) in the hammer throw and Rachel Alesi in the discus throw (157-00 (47.85m)).
Alesi was part of a 1-2-3 sweep in the discus, with Anushi Desai (144-01 (43.92)) and Coryne McKenney (143-01 (43.61m)) placing second and third, respectively, in their Aztec debut.
McKenney added a runner-up finish in the shot put with a toss of 36-00.25 (10.98m)) and Victoria Dickerson came in second in the hammer throw (168-02 (51.26m)). Draxler added a third-place showing in the long jump (17-04.75 (5.30m), adding to her pole vault victory, and Marissa Berry came in third in the pole vault, clearing 12-00.50 (3.67m).
The Aztecs totaled 110 points for second place, 41 behind the host UC San Diego (151). Point Loma Nazarene (53) followed SDSU in third, Cal State San Marcos was fourth (33), Cal State Dominguez Hills fifth (30) and Navy in sixth (2).
SDSU splits squads next weekend, sending some to the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles and others to the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Challenge in nearby Point Loma.
