SAN DIEGO - No. 18 San Diego State held a 3-2 lead after one quarter, but could not hold on in falling to the Chinese National Team, 17-6, Saturday afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex. The exhibition marked the only competition for SDSU this week.
After falling behind by a goal, Caroline Israels single-handily outscored China, 3-1, the rest of the quarter. The junior leveled the score at 1-1 and later at 2-2 before punching in her third goal with 3:38 to play. In the second quarter, however, the Chinese National Team took over and scored six goals, while holding the Aztecs off the scoreboard.
At the start of the second half, China scored two more times to push its scoring run to 8-0 before Hannah Carrillo put a stop to it all with a goal three minutes into the frame. The Chinese National Team increased its lead with three more goals and Courtney Jarvis ended the quarter with a goal to pull San Diego State to within 13-5. In the final eight minutes, China found the back of the net four more times and Israels completed the scoring for SDSU with her fourth goal of the day.
Rachel Mitchell started the game in net and played three quarters, making seven saves. Kathleen McDonnell played the final eight minutes and made four stops.
San Diego State returns to action next Saturday when it competes at the UCSD Invitational in La Jolla. The Aztecs will face LMU at 9:50 a.m. PT at Canyonview Pool.
