ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 15 San Diego State got behind early and could not overcome its deficit in being upset by No. 24 Marist, 8-6, Sunday morning at the Michigan Invitational. The loss dropped the Aztecs to 1-2 on the season.

SDSU allowed three first-quarter goals to the Red Foxes, one apiece from Katie Tijerina, Alexa Ovalle and Amanda Amorosa, and was shutout itself. It was not until Tayla Walsh scored off a pass from Ioli Benekou that the Aztecs dented the scoreboard. The goal seemed to get San Diego State going from an offensive standpoint as Alyssa Diacono scored 33 seconds later. Marist, however, weathered the storm and scored twice more before Hannah Carrillo found the back of the cage. The Red Foxes went into intermission ahead, 5-3.

Things looked bright for San Diego State when Nikole Ferrari opened the second half with a goal 45 seconds in, but Marist, once again had an answer, this time scoring three consecutive goals to take an 8-4 lead into the final eight minutes.

In the fourth quarter, Marist held the Aztecs off the scoreboard until there was 4:31 left when Ferrari scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity. SDSU later took advantage of another power-play situation as Benekou scored off a feed from Caroline Israels, but with only 53 seconds left, San Diego State ran out of time to complete the comeback.

SDSU returns to the pool and completes action at the Invitational at 2:40 p.m. ET when it faces No. 11 UC Santa Barbara.
