SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State won 11 of 12 individual races plus a pair of relays and both diving events as it defeated the University of San Diego, 145-131, Friday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex. It was SDSU's final dual meet of the 2015-16 season as it finishes with an 11-1 record.
Three Aztecs ended the day with two victories apiece in individual events. Sophomore Summer Harrison won both the 100 and 200 butterfly races with times of 54.99 and 2:02.99 respectively. In addition she was a member of both of SDSU's winning relay teams.
In the 200 medley relay, she combined with teammates Kate Santilena, Cecilia Zaccarelli and Samantha Guttmacher to open the meet with a win in a time of 1:44.92. Harrison later teamed with Taylor Johnson, Whitney Weisz and Guttmacher to wrap up the afternoon with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:28.18.
The Aztecs' other swimming event double winner was freshman Francesca Arredondo, who captured both the 500 and 1000 freestyle. Her time of 10:15.73 in the 1000 was the ninth-fastest time ever by an SDSU swimmer and was also the ninth-fastest time for the Aztec Aquaplex. Her mark of 4:59.16 in the 500 free ranks as the 10th-best time in the history of San Diego State's pool.
On the diving side, Alexandra Caplan was victorious on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Her score of 323.78 on the 1-meter springboard was a new school record as well as the highest mark ever at the Aquaplex. Her mark of 342.38 on the 3-meter board was a personal best and the second-highest in program history.
In addition, diver Nicole Dutton was second on the 3-meter board with a personal best score of 298.95. That mark goes into the SDSU record book as the seventh-highest ever.
Seven other Aztecs took first place in their individual swimming races led by a quartet of seniors making their final appearance at the Aquaplex. That winning foursome included Taylor Johnson in the 50 fee (23.15), Shannon Herman in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.82), Natilee Ruiz in the 200 backstroke (2:02.94) and Whitney Weisz in the 100 freestyle (50.87).
SDSU's other first-place finishes were turned in by Kate Santilena in the 100 backstroke (57.31), Cecilia Zaccarelli in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.84) and Rachael Kelch in the 200 individual medley (2:07.08).
Although the Aztec swimmers have concluded their dual meet schedule, the divers will have one more competition prior to the conference championships. They will be in Colorado Springs on Feb. 5-6 for the annual Air Force Diving Invitational.
The entire team will then compete at the 2016 Mountain West Championships set for Feb. 17-20 at College Station, Texas.
