RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- The No. 38 San Diego State men's tennis team got its 2016 dual campaign started with a bang, topping UC Riverside in the team's first dual match of the season, 5-1, at the Sunrise Country Club on Sunday.
San Diego State opens the season with a 1-0 record for the sixth consecutive year, while the Highlanders fall to 0-2.
"Capping off our long weekend with our first dual match win is a great way to kick off the spring season," head coach Gene Carswell said.
After Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) did not finish their match in the No. 1 spot against Julian Ruffin and Sean Yun, the Aztecs took flight. Marko Goles-Babic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Hesse, Germany) topped Sean Robles and Kyle McCann, 6-1. Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) and Sander Gjoles-Anderson (Klampenborg, Denmark) also defeated their opponent, Calvin Ngo and Hans Baumstark, 6-1.
San Diego State maintained its hot start in singles play. Cornelius Kolb (Frankfurt, Germany) continued his inaugural weekend in the Scarlet and Black with a close 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 (3) win over Ngo. After Goles-Babic fell to Kyle McCann, 6-2, 6-3, Jebens helped the Aztecs rebound with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ruffin. Meinzer then nearly shut out his opponent in the No. 4 spot, Jack Felich, 6-1, 6-0. Raul de la Torre (Calexico, Calif.) capped off San Diego State's day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Baumstark.
Next up, the Aztecs will travel to Fort Worth, Texas for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. San Diego State will face TCU on Sat., Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. (CT) and will take on the winner of the match between Oklahoma State and Harvard on Sun., Jan. 24.
