LOS ANGELES - San Diego State completed the opening day at the UCLA Bruin Diving Invitational as it placed three of four divers in the upper half of the final individual standings in the 1-meter springboard competition. The three-day meet is being hosted by UCLA at its Spieker Aquatics Center.
Included in the field was a total of 45 athletes from the UCLA, USC, Cal, San Jose State, Utah, UC Davis, Cal State Bakersfield, Azusa Pacific and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
SDSU sophomore Alexandra Caplan led the Aztecs with a fifth-place overall finish. Her score of 281.35 in the prelims put her in fourth entering the finals where she scored a 278.70 to total 560.05 on the day. The event was won by UCLA's Maria Polyakova with a score of 633.05.
Makena Chamoures turned in SDSU's next-best finish as she placed 21st with a mark of 233.25. Right behind her was teammate Payton Gabris, who was 22nd with a score of 232.45. In addition, Nicole Dutton scored 208.65 to capture the 30th spot.
Competition at the Bruin Diving Invitational continues on Saturday (Jan. 16) with prelims on the 3-meter board scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m.
