SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State swimming and diving team finished with a win and a loss in its double dual meet against New Mexico and Washington State Saturday morning at the Aztec Aquaplex. SDSU defeated the Lobos (208-92) but fell to the Cougars (162.5-132.5). With the results the Aztecs' season record now stands at 4-1.
San Diego State won four of the 14 swimming events, establishing pool record in the day's final relay and also captured both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
Senior Taylor Johnson swept the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Her time of 23.15 in the 50 free was the second-fastest ever at the Aztec Aquaplex. Her mark of 51.26 in the 100 free race ranks as the sixth-fastest ever at the facility.
Sophomore Summer Harrison Whitney was SDSU's other individual winner as she captured the 100 butterfly with a mark of 54.61.
In the day's final event, the foursome of Johnson, Cailey Steffens, Sami Guttmacher and Whitney Weisz set an Aztec Aquaplex record by going 1:33.07 in the 200 freestyle relay.
SDSU had a number of other swimmers record second and third place finishes in various events. Natilee Ruiz (1:50.70) and Weisz placed second and third respectively in the 200 freestyle with Ruiz just .06 second behind the race winner.
Cecilia Zaccarelli was second in the 100 breaststroke, tailing the first-place finisher by only .08 second.
In addition, freshman Rachael Kelch's second place in the200 butterfly came with a time (2:01.95) that was the third-fastest for the Aquaplex.
In the diving, sophomore Alexandra Caplan and Makena Chamoures finished one-two on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Caplan turned in a score of 304.80 and Chamoures a 275.03 on the 1-meter springboard. The duo scored 308.85 and 267.08 on the 3-meter board respectively.
Up next for the Aztec swim team is a trip to College Station, Texas, to compete in the Art Adamson Invitational at Texas A&M during the weekend of Nov. 19-21. The SDSU divers, meanwhile, will be in Tucson, Ariz., from Nov. 20-22 for the annual Wildcat Diving Invitational at the University of Arizona.
