The San Diego State swimmers concluded competition at the Art Adamson Invitational Saturday evening, finishing with a total of 243 points and a sixth-place finish among the 10 teams at the meet. At the Wildcat Diving Invitational in Arizona, sophomore Alexandra Caplan won the 1-meter event as SDSU placed a pair of divers in the finals for the second straight day.
Caplan placed second in the prelims of the 1-meter springboard at the Wildcat Invitational (in Tucson, Ariz.) with 284.60 points and improved on that score to win the event with a mark of 284.60 in the finals. Teammate Makena Chamoures, meanwhile, scored 262.30 in the prelims to finish seventh, then retained that place in the finals with a score of 256.00.
Two other divers were also involved on the 1-meter board with Payton Gabris finishing 19th in the prelims (227.40) and Nicole Dutton taking 24th (217.20). A total of 40 divers competed in the event.
At the Art Adamson Invitational in College Station, Texas, the Aztec swimmers began the third day's finals session by placing a pair of swimmers in the top 16 in the 1650 freestyle. Alex Wolf finished 15th in 17:11 78 while teammate Corinn Casper was right behind her in 17:13.24.
In the 100 freestyle, senior Whitney Weisz placed seventh in the championship final with a time of 49.95. That mark was an NCAA B cut, provisionally qualifying for next March's NCAA Championships.
Also in the 100 free, Savannah Miller captured third in the B final in 49.85, a time that ties for the fifth-fastest mark in program history.
Sophomore Taylor Young, in her first season at SDSU after transferring from California, won the B final (ninth overall) in the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.58, an NCAA B cut as well as the third-fastest time ever by an SDSU swimmer.
In the 200 butterfly, Summer Harrison won the B final while setting a San Diego State record (and an NCAA B cut) with a time of 1:58.01. Fellow Aztec Rachael Kelch placed sixth in the B final of the event with a time of 2:01.62, sixth-best all-time at SDSU.
In the meet's final event, the 400 freestyle relay, the Aztec quartet of Taylor Johnson, Miller, Samantha Guttmacher and Weisz placed sixth with a time of 3:20.66. That mark goes into the SDSU record book as the sixth-fastest among the all-time top 10.
With the conclusion of the Art Adamson Invitational, the Aztec swimmers will return home while the divers will compete on the platform at the Wildcat Diving Invitational on Sunday. San Diego State's next competition will be a dual meet against Cal Poly on Friday, Dec. 12, at 10:00 a.m. in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
