BEIJING - Former San Diego State track and field athlete Whitney Ashley advanced to the finals of the discus throw at the IAAF World Championships today in Beijing.
Ashley, who was second at the USA Outdoor Championships in June, had the 11th-best throw out of 31 entrants with a heave of 199 feet, 9 inches (60.88m). Tuesday's final begins at 4 a.m. PDT (7 p.m. CTD).
Ashley won the 2012 NCAA title in the discus while competing for the Aztecs.
Shanieka Thomas, a three-time NCAA triple jump champion (2013-14 outdoor, 2014 indoor) and a two-time runner-up finisher (2012 outdoor, 2013 indoor), is in the triple jump final, which starts at 4 a.m. PDT Monday.
