SAN DIEGO - San Diego State track and field assistant coach Greg Garza will join former Aztecs Whitney Ashley and Shanieka Thomas at the 15th IAAF World Championships later this week in Beijing. Garza will coach Jared Schuurmans, who won the men's discus throw at the USA Championships in June.

Schurrmans, who represents the National Athletic Institute, won the event with a throw of 212 feet, 1 inch (64.64 meters). Schurrmans enters the competition this week with the 12th-best mark in the world with a heave of 216-10 (66.10m), set June 7 in Claremont, Calif.

The men's discus gets underway on Wednesday, Aug. 26 (Thursday, Aug. 27 in Beijing) with the qualification groups. Group A starts at 6:30 p.m. PT, while Group B is set for 7:50 p.m. PT. The finals, meanwhile, will be contested on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 4:50 a.m. PT. Results for the discus will be posted on the IAAF's website (www.IAAF.org).

Garza, a three-time All-American while at UCLA and a two-time Olympic Trials participant, will be entering his third season as the throws coach at San Diego State this year (2015-16).

Ashley will represent the United States in the discus throw, while Thomas will compete for Jamaica in the triple jump.
