EUGENE, Ore. -
San Diego State senior Kristen Brown completed her collegiate career with a 17th-place finish in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at Hayward Field.
With the bar opening at 13 feet, 3 ½ inches (4.05 meters), Brown cleared it on her second attempt. However, Brown was unable to clear the next height (13-09.25 (4.20m)) on three tries and was eliminated from competition. Her 17th-place finish was one place off last year, when she took 16th with the same mark (13-03.50 (4.05m)).
Brown came into the meet with the 16th-best mark in the country of 14-00.50 (4.28m)), when she won the event at the Mountain West Championships for a third consecutive year. That was the third-best height in school history.
Demi Payne of Stephen F. Austin won the event with a NCAA meet-record leap of 15-05.00 (4.70m).
SDSU could have some former athletes qualify for the USA Outdoor Championships in two weeks or other national championships throughout the world. Those qualifiers will be announced next week.
