LOS ANGELES - One day after upsetting its opponent to advance in the NCAA Championship, the San Diego State men's tennis team could not replicate its success, falling to USC, 4-0. The Aztecs fell behind early by dropping the doubles point and were unable to spark a rally in singles play. SDSU ends its season by advancing the farthest into the NCAA Championship in over a decade.
In doubles action, Nick Crystal and Thibault Forget defeated Santiago Cevallos and Marko Goles-Babic in the third spot, 8-3. On the second court, the 74th-ranked doubles team of Max de Vroome and Eric Johnson claimed the point for the Trojans as they topped Thorsten Bertsch and Jonas Meinzer, 8-5. The match in the top spot between No. 3 Yannick Hanfmann and Roberto Quiroz and 71st-ranked Freddy Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens was suspended at 7-3 in favor of Southern California.
In singles play, the Aztecs faced a wall of nationally-ranked singles players which stood in their way of advancing into the next round. In the third position No. 85 Johnson notched a score of 3-0 before Goles-Baic was forced to retire due to injury. In the sixth spot, 61st-ranked Crystal defeated Cevallos, 6-0, 6-3, to put USC within one point of victory. On court No. 4 Wang, the 45th-ranked player in the nation, topped Bertsch to clinch the victory for the Trojans, 6-3, 6-2.
San Diego State concludes its season with a 19-9 overall record, the co-Mountain West Player of the Year (Gelbrich), two all-conference singles selections (Gelbrich and Jebens), one all-league doubles team (Gelbrich and Jebens) and advanced into the second round of the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2003.
