SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Track and Field team posted an additional 69 points on the final day of the 2015 Mountain West Outdoor Championships to give the Aztecs a grand total of 116 points. The Aztecs claimed eight top 5 finishes, including a first-place performance by sophomore Micha Auzenne (13.38) in the 100-meter hurdles.
At the conclusion of the four-day championship meet, the Aztecs claimed third with 116 points, behind 2015 champion Colorado State (167) and second-place finisher New Mexico (133). Following SDSU in fourth place was Utah State (68), UNLV (5th, 64), Boise State (6th, 62), Nevada (7th, 61), Wyoming (8th, 52), Fresno State (9th, 51), San Jose State (10th, 33) and Air Force (11th, 12). San Diego State went into Saturday sitting in third place with 47 points, trailing New Mexico (57) and Colorado State (56).
In the 100-meter hurdles, teammates Kristen Brown (13.44) and Madison Gipson (13.93) placed second and eighth following Auzenne's (13.38) first-place lead. Auzenne and Brown joined freshman teammates Simone Glenn and Jazmen Bunch to run the 4x100 relay, clocking in at 45.73 seconds to earn them a No. 3 spot on top the podium.
Glenn improved later in the day Saturday by running a career-best 11.58 seconds in the 100, putting her at third place. She later took fourth in the 200 at 23.55. Also racing in the 100 were Auzenne (11.79) and Bunch (11.87) who placed sixth and seventh for the Aztecs.
In the shot put, MW Championship returner, Jasmine Burrell threw a collegiate-best heave of 52-08.00 (16.05m)) to put her in second. Alexa Evans (47-00.25) and Ariel Oliver (46-11.50) also made it within the top 10 with their throws by taking sixth and seventh, adding to SDSU's final team score.
Sophomore Madison Gipson who qualified in Friday's prelims finished the 400 hurdles in 1:02.50 to secure a sixth-place spot. Meanwhile, Tyra Lea claimed fifth in the 400 at 55.31.
San Diego State will compete at the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Rounds in Austin, Texas May 28-30, which takes the top 48 of the NCAA West Regional. The top-12 finishers in each event at the NCAA Preliminary Rounds then advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., from June 10-13.
