SAN DIEGO - The No. 37-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team picked up its third-straight victory in Mountain West play on Sunday afternoon, defeating Nevada, 5-1, at Aztec Tennis Center.
SDSU (15-5, 3-1 MW) won its fifth-straight dual match overall, and improved to an impressive 15-1 at Aztec Tennis Center this season. The victory also pulls the Aztecs into a share of first place in the conference standings after Utah State defeated previously unbeaten New Mexico on Sunday.
The match began with San Diego State sweeping doubles play to earn the point. The Aztecs' No. 1 team and 65th-ranked duo of junior Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and sophomore Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) took down Moez Charqui and Robert Allan, 6-3, for its third-straight win and 15th victory on the No. 1 doubles court this season.
The No. 2 unit of sophomore Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) and Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany) knocked off Billy Bumgardner and Robert Margitfalvi, 6-4, to clinch the point, while the No. 3 team of sophomore Marko Goles-Babic (Zagreb, Croatia) and freshman Santiago Cevallos (Querétaro, Mexico) defeated Andrew Poustie and Ryan Andrada, 6-3.
Singles play started with Jebens playing in the No. 2 slot and topping Poustie, 6-2, 6-3, for his 10th-consecutive singles victory, while Meinzer earned a win on the No. 6 court over Margitfalvi, 7-5, 6-4.
No. 111th-ranked Gelbrich sealed the dual-match victory with his No. 1 singles win against Charqui, 6-2, 7-6 (7), and senior Andranik Khachatryan (Burbank, Calif.) picked up a come-from-behind win on the No. 5 court over Allan, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
With the final outcome decided, Ianakiev dropped a three-set match on the No. 4 court to Andrada, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Goles-Babic's No. 3 singles match against Fernando Sunago went unfinished in the third set, 5-7, 6-3, 1-2.
The Aztecs return to the court on Wednesday, as they take a short break from conference play to face crosstown foe University of San Diego at home beginning at 3 p.m. PT.
