SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State track and field team completed its first day at the annual UCSD Triton Invitational with top-10 finishes by senior Jasmine Burrell (discus) and freshman Courtney Jackson (pole vault).
Burrell continued her climb to the top in the open discus event where she threw an impressive 172 feet, 8 inches (52.63 meters) and finished 10th, beating 63 others. Prior to today, her season-best mark came from last week's performance at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., where she threw 171-03.
Meanwhile, Jackson improved and cleared a notable 12-01.50 (3.70m) in the open pole vault, which marks a new career best for the freshman.
In the open hammer throw, Burrell finished in 21st, throwing 174-11 (53.31m). Other impressive showings came from Freja Liljedahl (172-09 (52.68m)), who came in 27th, Victoria Dickerson (168-11 (51.45m)), who took 32nd, Alexa Evans (148-01 (45.15m)), who came in 48th and Katherine Magill (106-04 (32.42m)), who finished in 68th. Magill also competed in the pole vault and ended in a tie with seven others after clearing 10-08.00 (3.25m)).
In the open discus following Burrell's performance was Evans, who came in 16th out of 73 total competitors with a heave of 166-10 (50.86m). Rounding out the event for SDSU was Ariel Oliver (155-01 (47.27m)) in 27th and Dickerson, who achieved a new season best for the year with a heave of 134-10 (41.10m).
San Diego State resumes action tomorrow at UCSD for the second and final day of the Triton Invitational. Live results and complete results will be available at GoAztecs.com.
