GREENSBORO, N.C. - San Diego began competition at the 2015 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships by advancing to a pair of consolation finals and scoring team points in the process. The meet is being hosted by North Carolina State at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
A total of 73 schools are represented at the national title meet. After the opening day of competition, 33 of those teams had recorded points including San Diego State with four as it sits in 29th place. It marked the fourth straight year in which the Aztecs have recorded points at the NCAA Championships as they are represented at the meet for the sixth straight season.
The Aztecs began their day by finishing 16th in the prelims for the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Anika Apostalon, Chelsea Bailey, Taylor Johnson and Whiney Weisz went 1:28.79 to claim the final spot in the consolation final.
In the evening session, the same foursome went 1:29.54 to place eighth in the B Final (16th overall) and register two points for their team.
In the 50 freestyle, Apostalon's time of 22.11 in the prelims tied for 13th place among 59 competitors and qualified her for the consolation final. In that B final she turned in a time of 22.22 to finish seventh (15th overall) to add two points to SDSU's team total.
Senior Chelsea Bailey's time of 22.53 in the 50 free prelims put her in 35th place.
In the 400 medley relay, the SDSU quartet of Apostalon, Laura Day, Summer Harrison and Bailey turned in a time of 3:39.16 to finish 30th in the prelims. Despite not advancing to the finals, the foursome's time enters the Aztec record book as the sixth-fastest in program history.
Action continues at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday with prelims beginning at 11:00 a.m. (ET) and finals at 7:00 p.m. (ET). San Diego State will compete in the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly (Harrison) and 100 backstroke (Apostalon and Bailey).
