SAN DIEGO - No. 12 San Diego State wrapped up its weekend by dropping a pair of games on the final day of the Aztec Invitational. SDSU fell to No. 16 Indiana, 10-7, before falling short to No. 10 Princeton, 6-4, on Sunday. With the losses, the Aztecs fall to 10-11 on the year.
San Diego State began its morning by competing against the Hoosiers, who carried a 3-0 lead into the second period. After Indiana freshman defender Kelly Matthews added another goal to the Hoosier side of the scoreboard late in the second, SDSU sophomore defender Ioli Benekou found an opening and scored a goal with 1:52 remaining. The half would not be complete until Matthews found the back of the net again, putting IU ahead, 5-1.
With the third quarter only 20 seconds old, sophomore center Alyssa Diacono knocked one in and momentum slowly swayed the Aztecs' way as senior utility Carina Carballo and Benekou both scored goals. Indiana didn't let up and responded with an additional two goals, both under the three-minute mark putting them ahead, 7-4, at the conclusion of the period. During their final quarter, the Hoosiers would trade goals back and forth with the Aztecs, each team posting three goals, but SDSU's effort was not enough as Indiana took home the victory.
In its second matchup of the day against the Tigers, SDSU welcomed the challenge against the 10th-ranked school in the country and started off by scoring the first goal, Diacono's second of the day. Princeton answered with three straight goals before allowing the Aztecs their second with 3:40 left in the half. Unfortunately for San Diego State, Princeton powered through the third quarter by posting an additional three goals. SDSU received single tallies from Benekou and Anique Hermann in the fourth and the duo helped keep the Tigers scoreless in the frame, but it was not enough to secure the win.
San Diego State returns to action on Thursday, March 19, when it travels north to play Loyola Marymount. The Golden Coast match is set to begin at 4 p.m. PT.
