ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Karsen Sper finished 12th in the pentathlon to pace the San Diego State track and field team Thursday at the Mountain West Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
Sper totaled 3,311 points over the five-event competition, just five points out of 11th place (Wyoming's Rebecca Harris, 3,316). Chari Hawkins of Utah State won the meet with 4,194 points, followed by New Mexico's Samantha Bowe (3,884) and Colorado State's Jessica Green (3,823).
Sper began the grueling day by taking ninth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.13 seconds, which got her 883 points. Next up was the high jump, where she came in 12th with a mark of 4 feet, 10 ¼ inches (1.48m) for 599 points.
In the shot put, Sper had the 10th-best throw with a mark of 31-03.75 (9.54m) for 499 points, followed by a 12th-place showing in the long jump of 16-10.50 (5.14m) and 598 points.
Sper saved her best for last with a fifth-place finish in the 800 in 2:26.89. The 2:26.89 was the fastest indoor 800 of her career and gave her 732 points to close out the competition.
After one of 17 events completed, defending champion New Mexico leads with 12 points. Utah State is a close second with 10 points, while Colorado State (6), Nevada (5), Fresno State (3), UNLV (2) and Wyoming (1) round out the first-day scoring.
Day two of the three-day meet gets underway Friday at 12:30 p.m. MT with the weight throw and closes with the distance medley relay at 5:20 p.m. MT.
