COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State had three divers finish in the top half of the 1-meter board and platform competitions on day one of the Air Force Diving Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. A total of 46 divers from 14 schools took part on the 1-meter springboard while 35 athletes competed for the platform title.
Freshman Alexandra Caplan led the Aztecs on both boards as she placed second on the 1-meter with a finals score of 277.90 and fifth on the platform with a mark of 221.75. She was second after the prelims with a score of 267.55.
Izzy Choquehuanca was SDSU's number-two finisher on the 1-meter board with a finals score of 243.10 to place ninth overall. She posted a mark of 243.60 to stand sixth at the end of the preliminary round.
Makena Chamoures was right behind Choquehuanca in 10th place with a mark of 234.65 in the finals. Earlier in the day she had a mark of 237.05 and 11th place after the prelims.
In addition to that trio, freshman Nicole Dutton finished in 21st with a mark of 223.85 while teammate Shannon Finigan place 27th with a score of 212.95.
The platform diving consisted of five dives with no prelims and saw Caplan lead San Diego State as she finished fifth with a score of 221.75. It was a personal best and ranks as the fifth-highest score ever for an Aztec diver on the platform.
Chamoures had SDSU's next highest score as she placed 13th at 195.55. Choquehuanca was just behind her with a mark of 194.25 with her total entering the Aztec record book as the ninth-best. Dutton also competed on the platform and turned in a score of 177.90 to place 18th.
The Aztec divers will continue competition at the Air Force Diving Invitational Saturday, Jan. 31, on the 3-meter board. Prelims get underway at 11:30 a.m. (MT) with finals set to start at 2:30 p.m. (MT).
