SAN DIEGO - The No. 69 San Diego State men's tennis team began its 2015 dual-match season on a high note, sweeping a doubleheader against UC Riverside, 7-0, and UC San Diego, 6-1, on Saturday at Aztec Tennis Center.

In the opening match of the day against UC Riverside, the Aztecs (2-0) won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, before freshman Santiago Cevallos (Querétaro, Mexico) capped off the flawless victory with his first collegiate win.

SDSU's No. 1 doubles team of junior Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) defeated UCR's team of Julian Ruffin and Sina Sharifi, 6-2, while the Aztecs' No. 2 duo of sophomore Marko Goles-Babic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Cevallos knocked off Michael Carella and Calvin Ngo, 6-1. San Diego State's No. 3 unit of senior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) and Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) finished off the doubles sweep with a decision over Luis Gastao and Sean Robles, 6-3.

Goles-Babic earned a straight-set victory over Ruffin, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles slot, and sophomore Milen Ianakiev topped Gastao in comeback fashion, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. Jebens knocked off Robles on the No. 3 court, 6-1, 6-2, Cevallos defeated Sharifi in No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-0, sophomore Saxon Buehning (Essex Fells, N.J.) took down Carella in the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 7-5, and Meinzer beat Ngo, 7-6 (2), 4-0 on the No. 6 court.

In Saturday night's second half of the doubleheader against UC San Diego, SDSU took two of three doubles matches to begin the contest, before winning six of seven singles matchups to seal the victory.

The No. 2 doubles team of Goles-Babic and Cevallos topped Alexandre Miaule and Horea Porutiu, 6-1, before UCSD's No. 3 unit of Mark Meyer and Kona Luu won a decision over Buehning and Ianakiev, 6-3. However, The Aztecs' No. 1 team of Jebens and Gelbrich clinched the doubles point with a victory over Axel Bouillin and Rajeev Herekar, 6-4.

Bertsch began singles action with a win against Bouillin, 6-0, 6-2, on the No. 1 singles court, while Goles-Babic took down Porutiu in the No. 3 slot, 6-2, 6-4, and Jebens earned a No. 5 singles victory over Miaule, 6-2, 6-2.

Ianakiev defeated Meyer, 6-2, 6-2, on the No. 4 court, Gelbrich knocked off Eric Tseng in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5, and Cevallos lost a hard-fought three-set decision to Justin Zhang, 4-6, 6-3, 12-10, on the No. 6 court.

San Diego State resumes action on Sunday, Jan. 25, when the Aztecs hit the road to face Utah State in their Mountain West opener, beginning at 11 a.m. MT.
