FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The San Diego State track and field team opened its 2015 season in fine fashion at the Northern Arizona Friday Night Duals in Flagstaff, Ariz. Three Aztecs picked up individual victories, while six made the school's all-time top-10 list.
Two of the three SDSU wins came by athletes making their San Diego State debut, including Ellison Grove in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 16.72 seconds) and Bonnie Draxler in the pole vault (13 feet, 8 ¼ inches (4.17m)), while Jasmine Burrell started her season out in style with a victory in the weight throw with a toss of 63-11.75 (19.50m). Draxler (No. 6 all-time with the Aztecs) and Grove (No. 10 at SDSU), both freshmen, logged top-10 marks in their respective events.
Grove teamed up with Ashley Henderson, Simone Glenn and Madison Gipson to take fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:56.34.
Arizona State transfer Micha Auzenne was second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.60) and added a fifth-place finish in the 60 (7.70), while Burrell came in fifth in the shot put (47-00.25 (14.33m)).
Karen Snapper recorded the eighth-best mark in school history in the pole vault at 13-00.25 (3.97m) en route to a runner-up finish, while Kortney Ross completed the 1-2-3 San Diego State sweep in the event in third (12-04.50 (3.77m)).
Ariel Oliver and Rachel Alesi also posted Aztec all-time top-10 marks in the shot put. Oliver (46-01.50 (14.06m)) and Alesi (45-05.75 (13.86m)), who finished seventh and eighth in the event, are now No. 6 and No. 8 on the school chart.
Jazmen Bunch had an impressive Aztec debut as well, taking second in the 200 (24.68) and fourth in the 60 (7.61). The 7.61 ranks 10th all-time at SDSU.
Elaine Ribeiro, who was San Diego State's top cross country runner in the fall, took second in the mile in 5:21.97, while Gipson came in third in the 60 hurdles in 8.62. Glenn (25.15) and Kira Moreland (18-03.00 (5.56m)) added fifth-place finishes in their respective events (200 and long jump).
The Aztecs went 2-3 in dual meet competition, defeating Arizona, 56-50, and Southern Utah, 70-35, and falling to Arizona State (59-57), Grand Canyon (76-61) and the host Lumberjacks (66-58).
SDSU returns to action in two weeks (Jan. 30-31) at the prestigious Armory Track Invitational in New York.
