COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State men's tennis freshman Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. The award is his first-career honor and the first for SDSU this dual season.
Jebens went 4-0 overall in two dual matches last weekend, lifting the Aztecs to victories away from home over No. 66 BYU, 6-1, on Saturday, and against MW foe UNLV, 4-3, on Sunday. The freshman earned singles wins over BYU's Jeremy Bourgeois, 6-2, 6-2, as well as a close decision over UNLV's Willie Sublette, 6-5 (7-4), 6-5 (8-6).
In addition, Jebens teamed with sophomore doubles partner Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) in No. 2 doubles play to top the Cougars' unit of Bourgeois and Serling Galli, 6-4, as well as the Rebels' team of Tamas Batyi and Dimitar Petrov, 6-2.
The Stuttgart, Germany native is 4-2 in singles play this dual season, all in the No. 4 slot, and has won three-straight singles matches overall. Meanwhile, Jebens and Gelbrich are 3-3 in No. 2 doubles action this season.
No. 57 San Diego State has won three-consecutive dual matches and 12-straight MW regular season matches. The Aztecs resume action on the road Thursday at Santa Clara, beginning at 3 p.m. PT, before playing at Pacific on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. PT.
