SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State swimming and diving team recorded dual meet wins over Air Force (141-135), Incarnate Word (142-133) and UC San Diego (151-127) Monday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex. In the process the Aztecs improved to 12-0 on the season as they have now been victorious in 71 of their last 72 dual meets.
SDSU captured 12 of the 14 swimming events including both relays and also captured the 3-meter diving event. Despite the closeness of the final scores, the Aztecs won handily as they elected not to score in six of the meet's final seven events.
Four San Diego State swimmers won two individual events apiece to pace the Aztecs. Senior Chelsea Bailey took first in both the 50 freestyle (23.87) and 100 freestyle (52.21) races while teammate Anika Apostalon captured the 100 backstroke (56.52) and 200 backstroke (2:03.07) events.
Sophomore Frida Berggren was also a double winner with victories in the 200 butterfly (2:04.29) and 200 individual medley (2:06.15). In addition, Laura Day won both breaststroke races with marks of 1:05.93 in the 100 breast and 2:23.42 in the 200 breast.
Also posting first-place finishes for SDSU were Summer Harrison in the 100 butterfly (55.20) and Natilee Ruiz in the 200 freestyle (1:52.08). Harrison, a freshman from Honolulu, set an Aztec Aquaplex record with her time in the 100 fly.
The foursome of Bailey, Apostalon, Day and Harrison led off the day with a win in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:45.07. In the meet's final event, the team of Apostalon, Bailey, Savannah Miller and Whitney Weisz took first in the 400 free relay in 3:30.55.
On the diving side, freshman Alexandra Caplan won the 3-meter event with a score of 329.35. That mark goes into the SDSU record book as the number-two best all-time effort by an SDSU diver and the score is also the second-highest ever recorded at the Aquaplex. The freshman from San Clemente, Calif., finished third on the 1-meter board (271.45).
Freshman Makena Chamoures made her Aztec diving debut a successful one as she placed second on the 1-meter springboard with a mark of 276.80, the eighth-highest in program history, while her score on the 3-meter board (285.05) ranks 10th.
Both of Chamoures' marks qualified her for the Zone Diving Meet in March while Caplan's scores also met the Zone qualifying standards. Two other divers, Izzy Choquehuanca and Nicole Dutton, also qualified for Zones with marks of 316.10 and 280.20 respectively on the 3-meter board.
Up next for San Diego State is a double dual meet against Grand Canyon and Incarnate Word on Saturday, Jan. 3, at noon at the Canyonview Aquatic Center on the campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla, Calif.
