SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team finished a perfect 8-0 in singles play on Day One of the SDSU Fall Invitational on Friday at Aztec Tennis Center.
Aztec sophomores Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany), Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany), Saxon Buehning (Essex Fells, N.J.) and freshman Santiago Cevallos (Querétaro, Mexico) each won two singles matches to begin tournament play strong. Ianakiev defeated Grand Canyon's Phillip Kuehnen, 6-3, 6-4, to begin the day, before topping GCU's Adrian Legaretta, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round. Ianakiev will face University of San Diego's Geoffrey Fosso in the third round on Saturday.
Meinzer started tournament play by knocking off UC San Diego's Mark Meyer, 6-4, 6-1, and followed it up with a victory over Denver's Yannik James, 6-1, 6-4. Buehning topped UCSD's Justin Zhang, 6-2, 6-3, in first-round action, before defeating Denver's Aiden Talcott, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round. Meinzer will take on Loyola Marymount's David Doehring on Saturday, while Buehning matches up with USD's Alex Arouzos.
Cevallos, who is competing in the round-robin third flight, defeated Denver's Zach Fryer, 6-4, 6-1, in Round 1, then knocked off GCU's Alexandre Martinez, 6-2, 7-6 (3), in Round 2. Cevallos will face UCSD's Andrew Maloszak in Round 3 on Saturday, before taking on Arizona's Shoki Kasahara in Round 4.
San Diego State split two first-round matches in the doubles tournament on Friday, as the duo of Cevallos and Meinzer topped UCSD's team of Maloszak and Justin Zhang, 8-0, while the Aztecs unit of Buehning and Ianakiev dropped its match to GCU's Mathieu Ouanian and Gregoire Balenci, 8-5. Cevallos and Meinzer fell short in its second-round match to Loyola Marymount's Doehring and Luke Bohuslav, 8-5. Doubles play will also resume on Saturday.
