SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State captured 12 of the 14 swimming events along with the 1-meter diving competition as it defeated Hawai'i, 157-132, at the Aztec Aquaplex Friday afternoon. With the victory the Aztec improved to 7-0 on the year while the meet was the first of the season for the Rainbow Wahine.
The Aztecs demonstrated the depth of this year's squad as nine different athletes recorded first-place finishes in the 10 individual events won by SDSU.
San Diego State's lone double winner was sophomore Anika Apostalon, who took first in both the 100 freestyle (49.88) and 200 freestyle (1:50.03) events. Her time in the 100 free established a new pool record for the Aquaplex.
Apostalon was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that set a facility record as well. She along with Chelsea Bailey, Taylor Johnson and Natilee Ruiz turned in a mark of 1:33.08 to better the previous top time at the pool by 1.7 seconds. It was the eighth-fastest time in SDSU history.
Among the Aztecs' eight other individual event winners, four registered times that rank among the top 10 at the Aquaplex. That group included Bailey in the 50 free (23.28 - 2nd), Summer Harrison in the 100 fly (55.99 - 7th), Emilee Campbell in the 200 breast (2:21.67 - 9th) and Ruiz in the 100 back (57.23 - 9th).
SDSU's final four individual event champions were Cecelia Zaccarelli in the 100 breast (1:05.44), Frida Berggren in the 200 fly (2:04.30), McKenna Garfein in the 200 back (2:045.87) and Shannon Herman in the 200 individual medley (2:08.22). In addition, Berggren's time of 4:58.94 in a second-place finish in the 500 free ranks 8th-best all-time at the Aquaplex.
The Aztecs other first-place finish came at the start of the meet when they won the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Bailey, Laura Day, Samantha Guttmacher and Maddy Dalcamo went 1:45.14.
On the diving side, Isabelle Choquehuanca was victorious on the 1-meter board and placed second in the 3-meter event. Her scores of 285.90 on the 1-meter and 297.08 on the 3-meter both qualify for the NCAA Zone Meet in March. Those marks also represented the fourth- and fifth-highest scores respectively for an SDSU diver and rank as the second- and eighth-best marks at the Aztec Aquaplex.
In addition, freshman Alex Caplan qualified for the Zone Meet with her score of 266.70 on the 1-meter board as she captured second place in that event.
Up next for the Aztecs is a double dual meet in Fort Collins, Colo., where they will face off against Colorado State and Idaho on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11:00 a.m. (MT) at CSU's Moby Pool.
