Oct. 15, 2014 SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team continues its fall season this weekend at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships, beginning on Friday, Oct. 17, in Malibu, Calif. The complete tournament page and brackets can be viewed here.
SDSU senior and 122nd-ranked Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) is the No. 8-seed in this weekend's singles draw, as he'll face the winner between Cal Poly's Axel Damiens and University of San Diego's Alexander Araquzos in the Round of 64 on Friday at 1 p.m. PT. In addition, sophomore Jonas Meinzer (Buggingen, Germany) also received an opening-round bye into the Round of 64, and will match up with Arizona's David Mushayev on Friday at 11:15 a.m. PT.
Six other Aztecs will compete in Friday morning's Round of 128, beginning at either 9:45 a.m. PT, or 11:15 a.m. PT. Junior Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) takes on UCLA's Ryoto Tachi, while sophomore Marko Goles-Babic looks to knock off UCLA's Michael Guzman, both starting at 9:45 a.m. PT.
Sophomore and SDSU Fall Invite champion Milen Ianakiev (Elz, Germany) takes on USC's David Laser, while sophomore Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) will face Cal Poly's Naveen Beasley, both at 11:15 a.m. PT.
In addition, SDSU sophomore Maxi Boewer-Stelter (Berlin, Germany) will compete in his first tournament this fall season when he takes on Arizona's Matthew Dunn in Friday morning's Round of 128, starting at 9:45 a.m. PT, which is the same time as freshman Santiago Cevallos' (Querétaro, Mexico) Round of 128 match against UC Irvine's Nico Mertens.
In doubles action, the Aztecs duo of Bertsch and Goles-Babic will face Cal Poly's unit of Benjamin Donovan and Corey Pang, while SDSU's team of Meinzer and Ianakiev will match up with USD's Araquzos and Romain Kalaydijan. The Aztecs doubles squad of Gelbrich and Jebens received a first-round bye, and will square off against the winner of the first-round match between UCLA and Grand Canyon, while SDSU's unit of Boewer-Stelter and Cevallos also has a first-round bye and will take on UC Santa Barbara's Tobias Galskov and Ziad Sultan.
