SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's tennis coach Gene Carswell has proudly announced the 2014 recruiting class for the 2014-15 season. The Aztecs have added highly touted Ohio State transfer Marko Goles-Babic (Zagreb, Croatia), Alabama transfer Saxon Buehning (Essex Fells, N.J.) and freshman Santiago Cevallos (Querétaro, Mexico) to the team's roster this fall.
In Goles-Babic's lone season at Ohio State, he went 4-1 overall and 2-0 in dual-match singles play, earning victories in both the No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots. He was 6-1 in doubles play during the dual season, with two wins apiece on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The 6-foot-5 sophomore has been ranked as high as No. 221 in the world on the junior circuit and No. 1,646 on the pro circuit. The big-serving freshman was part of a Buckeye team that was ranked as high as No. 1 during dual play.
Buehning went 5-7 overall and 2-3 in dual play as a freshman for the Crimson Tide, playing the majority of his singles matches in the No. 4 slot, while going 3-3 in doubles play. The 6-foot-1 sophomore was ranked No. 1 in New Jersey by TennisRecruiting.net, and has played in seven International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments. After sitting out nine months in 2011 with a broken leg, Buehning returned to win the Super Series championship in Florida.
Cevallos has a career record of 48-46 in ITF singles competition, with victories over some of the top-ranked opponents the last two years. He's a former national champion in Mexico, and has been one of the top players in the country since age 14.
San Diego State finished 12-12 in the 2014 dual season and was the No. 3-seed in the Mountain West Tournament en route to advancing to the conference semifinals. The Aztecs were ranked as high as 57th in the nation with two victories against nationally ranked opponents, and extended its MW regular-season winning streak to 12-straight matches.
