Sept. 27, 2014 TULSA, Okla. - Two San Diego State men's tennis players advanced to the third round of the 2014 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships pre-qualifying singles bracket by winning two matches apiece on Saturday.
Junior Freddy Gelbrich (Isernhagen, Germany) and sophomore Hendrik Jebens (Stuttgart, Germany) each moved on to the third round, while sophomore Marko Goles-Babic earned a first-round victory before falling in the second round.
Gelbrich was the first to advance, defeating Joel Rubio of UT San Antonio in the opening round, 6-1, 6-1, before earning a three-set victory over Wichita State's Ilija Cuic in the second round, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Jebens knocked off Middle Tennessee's Victor Hoang in the first round, 6-2, 6-2, then defeated Oregon's Joey Swaysland in the second round, 7-5, 6-1. Meanwhile, Goles-Babic defeated Tulsa's Chase Gordon, 6-3, 6-4, but then lost to Oregon's Jayson Amos in the second round, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
With the victories, Gelbrich and Jebens will each begin third-round action on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
