San Diego State track and field sophomore Nicole Oudenaarden won the heptathlon at the North America, Central America, Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships over the weekend in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada.
Representing Canada, Oudenaarden won the two-day, seven-event competition from Aug. 8-9 with 5,692 points, easily outdistancing Dominican Republic's Milagros Montes de Oca's 5,451 points. USA's Quintunya Chapman came in third at 5,332, while Rachel Machin (Canada) and Brittany Howell (USA) were fourth and fifth, respectively, at 5,274 and 5,219.
Oudenaarden, the youngest competitor in the heptathlon, kicked off the meet by taking fifth in the 100-meter hurdles Friday in 14.47 seconds. Next up was the high jump, where Oudenaarden was third with a height of 5 feet, 6 inches (1.68 meters). Oudenaarden was then second in the shot put (42-05.50 (12.94m)), before wrapping up the first day by coming in third in the 200 in 25.36.
Oudenaarden won two of the final three events on Saturday, taking down the long jump in 18-08.75 (5.71m) and the javelin throw in a personal-best toss of 160-05 (48.90m). The 160-05 in the javelin broke her own school-record mark of 155-04, which she set April 26 at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla. Oudenaarden completed the win by coming in third in the 800 in 2:23.89.
Oudenaarden was one of five Aztecs who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, where SDSU finished in a tie for 12th with 18 points. It was San Diego State's third consecutive top-25 team finish.
