SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's golf head coach Ryan Donovan announced the signing Monday of Pablo Matesanz to a National Letter of Intent. A native of San Sebastian, Spain, Matesanz is the third newcomer to join the Aztecs for the upcoming 2014-15 season, along with PJ Samiere and Blake Abercrombie, who both committed to the program during the early signing period last November.
Matesanz has excelled in junior golf competition on the international stage, highlighted by his first triumph on American soil last September at the 2013 Coronado City Amateur Championships, where he shot a combined 8-under par 136 to claim a one-shot victory at nearby Coronado Municipal Golf Course.
"Pablo has a tremendous amount of tournament experience and has high expectations for our golf program," Donovan said. "He has one of the best short games we have witnessed recently, and he will fit right in with our team chemistry."
Matesanz also captured medalist honors at the 2011 Lacoste Promesas in his native country, before claiming the top prize at the 2012 Biarritz Town Cup in France.
A 2012 graduate of Nazaret High School, Matesanz has logged six additional top-five finishes over the past four years, including two this earlier this winter at the Copa de Andalucía, where he tied for the runner-up position, followed by a third-place tie at the Copa Baleares.
Matesanz has also represented Spain at the 2009 Evian Masters and the 2010 McGregor Trophy, where he finished first in the 15-year-old age group, as well as international match-play championships against neighboring France.
Coach Donovan is entering his 12th season at SDSU after leading the Aztecs to a school-record 16th consecutive NCAA regional appearance last May.
