NEW YORK - San Diego State junior Jordan Smith (Redlands, Calif.) has been named to the 2014 Remington Trophy Fall Watch List, the Rimington Trophy Committee announced on Tuesday. Smith is one of 66 players on the list, which is presented annually to the most outstanding center in FBS.
Smith, one of three returning starters on the offensive line for the Aztecs, enters the 2014 campaign with 14 career starts, including all 13 contests at center last season. In 2013, Smith helped running backs Adam Muema (1,244 yards, 15 touchdowns) and Donnel Pumphrey (752 yards, eight touchdowns) rush for a combined 1,996 yards and 23 touchdowns in 13 games. He also helped quarterback Quinn Kaehler (3,007 yards and 19 touchdowns) become the ninth quarterback in school history (13th time overall) to throw for 3,000 yards in a season.
The Rimington Trophy Committee bases the award on All-America teams chosen by the Walter Camp Foundation (WCF), Sporting News (SN) and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, January 17, 2015.
Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.
San Diego State returns 12 starters and 35 letterwinners from a team that finished 8-5 overall and 6-2 in Mountain West play a year ago, culminating with a victory over Buffalo, 49-24, in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. With its bowl game appearance, the Aztecs became one of only 29 teams in the nation, and one of just five non-BCS schools, to play in a bowl game in each of the last four seasons.
Season tickets are currently on sale through GoAztecs.com and the SDSU ticket office (619) 283-SDSU. An internet only presale for the KGB SkyShow game on Nov. 8 against Idaho is now available for KGB listeners, SDSU season-ticket holders and Aztec Nation subscribers.
