SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State Head Volleyball Coach Deitre-Collins Parker was involved in the live airing of the presentation of the Honda Cup, awarded to the top female college athlete, on Monday, June 30. The show aired on the CBS Sports Network from the USC Founders Club at Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
As a two-time Honda Cup (formerly the Broderick Cup) winner while at the University of Hawai'i, Collins-Parker was interviewed during the broadcast and also served as one of the show's interviewers during the hour-long program.
As a collegian, Collins-Parker led the Rainbow Wahine to consecutive national titles and a 110-5 record in her final three seasons. Collins capped off her career by becoming the first volleyball player to be awarded the Broderick (Honda) Cup recipient, given to the nation's best collegiate female athlete in all sports.
Honda Sports Awards are presented to the top female college athletes in 12 Division I sports. From that group one is selected to receive the Honda Cup, symbolic of the top collegiate woman athlete.
The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $2.8 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
In addition the to the 12 Honda Sports Award winners vying to be named the Honda Cup winner and Collegiate Woman of the Year, tonight's broadcast will also feature the presentation of the Honda Inspiration award, the Honda Division II Player of the Year and the Honda Division III Player of the Year.
