NORMAN, Okla. - San Diego State men's golfer Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) was one of 27 student- athletes named to the 2013-14 PING Division I All-West Region team as announced Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). With his selection, the Aztec junior is now eligible for PING All-America consideration and gives SDSU its 10th all-region honoree since the award was established in 2008.
Overall, a total of 14 schools were represented in the West, while 157 total players were honored across six regions - Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West.
A two-time All-Mountain West pick, Schauffele was one of just two golfers to play all 36 scheduled rounds for the Aztecs during the 2013-14 campaign, leading the team with eight top-10 finishes and a 71.61 scoring average, which ranked third in the conference. In addition, the Scripps Ranch High alumnus garnered MW Golfer of the Week on three occasions this season and topped the squad with 16 rounds below par, including nine in the 60s.
Schauffele, who is listed 43rd in the latest Golfstat Cup national rankings, logged his second individual title as a collegian at SDSU's own Lamkin Grips Classic and finished alone in fourth place at Pepperdine's Jones Invitational, helping the Aztecs to their lone tournament championship of the season. He also tied for the fifth position at the MW Championship and was the team's highest finisher at the NCAA Columbia Regional in Missouri, where he took 20th in a highly competitive field.
Under the direction of 11th-year head coach Ryan Donovan, San Diego State ended the 2013-14 campaign by making its school-record 16th consecutive regional appearance, where it posted an eight-place finish.
