LARAMIE, Wyo. - Kristen Brown won her second straight pole vault title to lead the 18th-ranked San Diego State track and field team Friday at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Laramie, Wyo.

The win helped the Aztecs extend their lead with seven of the 21 events completed. SDSU has 68.50 points, followed by Colorado State (52), Boise State (32.50) and New Mexico (29). Nevada is fifth with 22, while Wyoming (21), Utah State (20), Fresno State (15), UNLV (12), Air Force (1) and San Jose State (0) round out the competing teams.

"We did everything we were supposed to today for the most part," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "We wanted to make the finals in the events and if we're supposed to score, we had to score. (The team) was committed to their job and committed to our team goal of winning another Mountain West championship. We're scrapping for a win."

Brown took first in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 10 ¼ inches (3.92 meters). Brown continued San Diego State's dominance in the event as an Aztec has now won 18 titles at the Mountain West Championships out of a possible 30 tries (indoor and outdoor). Brown beat out 13 others in the event.

Jasmine Burrell led the throwers once again by taking second out of 19 in the discus throw with a heave of 179-04 (45.67). Three others scored for SDSU in the event, including Alexa Evans, who was fifth with the sixth-best throw in school history of 165-04 (50.39m). Rachel Alesi (154-07 (47.12m)) and Ariel Oliver (154-05 (47.08m)) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

"I was close to my (personal record) and did everything my coach asked of me," Jasmine Burrell said. "I'm most excited about getting all the throwers on the podium. I wasn't concerned about winning this, but just competing, staying consistent and attacking each of my throws. I'm excited at how we competed."

Nicole Oudenaarden, who yesterday captured her first-ever MW title by winning the heptathlon, came in third today in the long jump with a wind-aided leap of 19-11.50 (6.08m). Brittany Bozeman was right behind in fourth (19-08.00 (5.99m)) with Shanieka Thomas coming in seventh at 19-04.25 (5.90m)).

"We knew the team was counting on (the heptathletes)" Oudenaarden said. "We weren't stressed about it since we've worked so hard. We are a strong group and we are happy we were able to score points and get us off to a good start. It was a really interesting meet, not the greatest weather for sure. It was great for me mentally and was nice to just worry about competing and not worry about points. It will definitely help me prepare for nationals."

In the pole vault, Snapper (fourth, 12-06.25 (3.82m)) and Kortney Ross (tied for fifth, 12-06.25 (3.82m)) also scored for San Diego State.

On the track, Marianne Hogan became just the second Aztec to ever score in the 10,000 and first since 2005 when she finished eighth in a time of 38 minutes, 52.58 seconds at 7,220 feet of elevation.

Three others qualified for tomorrow's finals across four events, including Meritzer Williams in both the 100 and 200. Williams ran the fastest 100-meter prelims of the day in 11.58 seconds, which was the seventh-fastest time in program history. She also moved on in the 200, clocking a wind-aided 23.72 en route to a second-place showing.

Allison Reaser, who yesterday came in second in the heptathlon, advanced to tomorrow's final in both the 100 hurdles (third, 13.59) and 400 hurdles (sixth, 1:02.42). Brown also qualified in the 100 hurdles, taking fourth in 13.60.

The javelin throw and 4x100 starts Saturday off at noon MT, while the meet closes with the 4x400 at 3:30 p.m. MT.
