Two-time NCAA champion Shanieka Thomas won the triple jump to lead the No. 14 San Diego State track and field team Saturday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Thomas, who won each of the past two NCAA triple jump titles (2014 indoor, 2013 outdoor), won this year's event at Drake with a leap of 44 feet, 4 inches (13.51 meters) into a 2.0 mph headwind. Thomas beat 26 other entrants in the event.
Kristen Brown also competed at the Drake Relays, taking sixth in the 100-meter hurdles finals in 14.01 seconds. Yesterday, Brown came in fourth in the prelims in a collegiate-best time of 13.50.
The rest of the team competed at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in nearby La Jolla, where the Aztecs posted 12 top-10 finishes.
Meritzer Williams finished second in the 200 with a time of 24.35 and fourth in the 100 in 11.90, while Rachel Roesgen was second in the 3,000 (10:15.90) and seventh in the 1,500 (4:39.00). Dynasty Gammage, meanwhile, took second in the 800 in 2:09.13, just outside the school's all-time top 10 (10th is 2:09.03).
Other top-10 finishes on the track came from Grace Hanshaw in the 5,000 (fourth, 17:54.08), and Madison Gipson (sixth, 14.34) and Karsen Sper (eighth, 14.39) in the 100 hurdles.
In the field events, Jasmine Burrell led the way, finishing third in the open shot put with a toss of 50-09.50 (15.48m) and Nicole Oudenaarden was third in the javelin (155-05 (47.35m)), No. 8 all-time at SDSU). Kortney Ross tied for fourth in the pole vault (12-01.50 (3.70m)), Nicole Oudenaarden was eighth in the high jump (5-04.25 (1.63m)) and Thresa Vinson took 10th in the pole vault (12-01.50 (3.70)).
